PRO-BONO Legal Representation
Marginalized Women and Girls in Uganda cannot afford Legal Representation.
Laws protecting women in Uganda are quite progressive, however rarely are they applied since few can afford it.
WAGRAU provides PRO-BONO representation, consultation and mediation to vulnerable women and girls in Uganda.
Common ways WAGRAU provides Pro Bono Services
Most common issues related to our Pro Bono work:
- Domestic Violence
- Rape
- Defilement (sexual relations with a minor)
- Assault
- Child Support
- Land Grabbing (family seeks to steal land away from a widow)
Walk-in Legal Services: Women and girls are able to walk-in to our legal clinic and receive free legal advice. If there is a need for mediation or representation, WAGRAU provides these services free of charge.
Mediation: When possible we pursue mediation to reach resolution in the most expedient manner.
Court Cases: When mediation is exhausted or impossible, WAGRAU brings cases to court.
Facilitating Police Investigations: People are not guaranteed legal representation, and all means of investigation are not always pursued. WAGRAU facilitates investigations by bringing victims to medical clinics for documentation (which WAGRAU also funds), and holding authorities accountable to investigate thoroughly and fairly - in a country riddled with bribery, often families will try to have cases brushed under the rug by paying authorities a bribe.
Legal Advice Radio Show: Our founder, Attorney Deborah Akello is a frequent guest on a local radio show, reaching tens of thousands of community members, providing legal information on a range of subjects.
Sometimes it’s as simple as representation.
