Women's Health & Safety
As WAGRAU challenges patriarchal social norms, we also SUPPORT women and girls’ HEALTH, both preventing further vulnerability and caring for them when they suffer the consequences of abusive, exploitive social norms.
Programs:
Emergency Short Term Shelter provided to women and girls who have been victims of domestic and gender based violence.
Emergency Medical Services (including surgery) provided to women and girls who have been assaulted or/and raped (including rape kit testing).
Crisis Pregnancy Care including miscarriages and c-section surgeries due to domestic violence and natural causes. Unfortunately parents, and “boyfriends” often beat women, young women in particular, when they become pregnant. WAGRAU is there to help.
Emergency HOTLINE is now available for community members to call for help or report crimes against women & girls, backed up by pro bono representation. In a country that does not have a centralized emergency number (like 911), there is literally no one to call - except to get to a clinic, or go to the police. And without representation, often people don’t bother.
Family Planning is provided in a discrete setting to women of all ages who are sexually active and do not desire to become pregnant - whether they are trying to space out their children, limit the number of children, or waiting to have children. WAGARU provides both injected and inserted forms of family planning options.
Self Defense Training: Since our team was trained in simple self defense strategies using your own body parts as “tools” WAGRAU has held regular events to train women how to defend themselves to escape assault.
